Too often, when considering changes to our educational environment, we either neglect to include the students (our priority stakeholders) or we bring them to the table without the foundational knowledge and training needed to navigate the systems of change. Many organizations put kids on their boards or give them a seat at important discussion tables simply to say they did it. They are checking a box on the inclusion list. Why not empower young people to facilitate those conversations and make the decisions that will impact their futures?
Trauma awareness, regulation strategies, and relationship-building skills empower kids to lead the change in their communities. As an educator and coach, I can help jumpstart that process with the young people in your school or organization.
Facilitating discussions about the science of trauma, its short-term and long-term impacts, and how our experiences affect how we show up in daily life helps students develop a greater sense of self and, for many, initiates the healing necessary on their journey to success.
Science shows us that the parts of our brain that feel are fully developed at birth, but the parts of the brain that regulate those emotions don't come to full fruition until our mid-twenties. Because young people navigate the gamut of emotions without the benefit of innate regulation, learning positive coping and problem-solving skills is critical for their empowerment.
As young people work through developing plans to tackle personal challenges, they will also learn to view their schools and the broader community through a lens of greater understanding. They will learn how to identify and engage community resources that are available to them. Then, they will lead the charge in creating positive change for themselves, for each other, and for the community around them.
The flexibility of this program IS its biggest flex! I will work with you to figure out the best timeframe to do the work. Whether we meet once a week for eight weeks or we build a day-long conference for kids, anything is possible.
